German Education System

University and Fachhochschule
There are two types of higher education in Germany, the Universität (universit, hereafter abbreviated as UNION) and Fachhochschule (university applied, hereinafter abbreviated as FH).

Differences between UNI and FH of them can be cited as follows:

    1) The material of study. UNION greater emphasis given to theory and to develop responsibility in science. Between theory and practice of composition in the range UNION 60:40. In contrast, FH (as the name suggests) is more stressed on the aspect of applied, theoretical and applied with the composition of 40:60.

    2) Schedule of lectures. Schedule of lectures at the UNI is Oct-March for the winter (Winter Semester) and April-September for the summer (Sommer Semester). In contrast to FH lecture starts earlier, ie from August to January for the winter (WAS) and from February to July for the summer (SS).

    3) When applying for. Because of differences in college as mentioned in 2), then the timetable for the selection process was also different. Registration at FH closed more quickly than in the UNI. (Look for a more detailed schedule)

The programs offered
a) The classical program

Unlike in Indonesia and three jejang system (Bachelors-Masters-Doctorate), up to now still adhered to the German higher education with two tiers, ie Diplom (Dipl.) and Doctor (Dr).

In this Diplom level, in the first-year students are required to follow a series of basic subjects (known by the name Grundstudium). After completing all courses in Grundstudium Vordiplom students were given certificates, but this is not a degree certificate. To complete Vordiplom, students will take approximately 2.5 years. After getting Vordiplom, then students are allowed to take skill courses at a higher level (known as Hauptstudium). After completing all courses Hauptstudium, then students are allowed to write final project (known Diplomarbeit name) as a condition of graduation Diplom. So, the first official title of Diplom is obtained after the person completed his studies at UNI or FH.

Between UNI and Diplom Diplom FH have differences, including:

    1) Diplom FH could be completed within 4.5 years while the new UNI Diplom could be completed within five years.

    2) Diplom FH have applied a larger load (60% lecture) compared with the Diplom UNION (40% lecture).

    3) Diplom FH is not designed to continue to jengang Doctor. If the holders of a Diplom UNION wish to pursue doctoral programs, then the visitor must follow the process equation first. In this phase, required him to follow a series of courses at level Hauptstudium. It can also he followed the Master's program first before proceeding to the doctoral program. Instead, owners can directly UNION Diplom degree to pursue Doctorate.

b) New Program

Based on the Bologna Agreement of 1999, all EU countries agreed to menyesuakan education system from country to country in the EU region. This needs to be done because the Maastricht Agreement in 1992 to ensure that all EU states must recognize the similarity degree and professionalism offered by the University of professions and institutions in other EU countries.

From 1999 the Bologna agreement, one that is in it all the EU countries will convert the system of higher education into three levels of Bachelor-Master-Doctorate. It was agreed also that the Bachelor (with a travel time of 3-4 years) is the first kesatjanaan title granted by the University, where owner of the title is believed to have been ready to enter the working world. Master of education program is to further education after the bachelor's and provided for two years.

Under the Bologna agreement in 1999, the UNI and FH in Germany has started to convert the old system to a system of Diplom-Doctoral new Bachelor-Master-Doctorate. Therefore, not surprisingly, there is now jengang ahmpir Bachelor-Master in all UNI and FH. No later than the year 2010 all UNI and FH in Germany have already adopted the system of Bachelor-Master-Doctorate hundred percent. In Feie Universität Berlin and Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, even this system has to be adopted at the latest full year 2007.
